Spill The Dirt Flower Truck

Spill The Dirt Flower Truck was started by Dana Dimitroff in February of 2021 and they have recently celebrated two years in business!

Spill the Dirt Flower Truck is a fully functioning mobile flower shop that often partners with local businesses and has a “popup” for the day. The business provides flower lovers with a unique flower buying experience operating in this manner. While visiting the truck, visitors get the opportunity to tap into their creative sides by making their own bouquet as all flowers are priced by the stem.

Some of the flowers are grown on Dana and her husband’s rural property, but having an ideal rural spot was not always the case. When she started the business two years ago, she was running it out of their home in Cambridge, Ontario. She had an industrial sized floral cooler that took residence in their living room and a garage that was not much larger than an oversized shed with a dirt floor. At the beginning, while her truck  “Andie” was in the shop for over a year shortly after being purchased, Dana had to pivot her business idea immediately. She took on weekly bouquet deliveries, changing her plans to run as a mobile flower shop. When the truck was out of the shop, it was time to pivot back to the original plan of being a mobile flower shop.

So, why not a brick and mortar location like others in the industry? Well… Dana just wasn’t connecting with that idea, and it is as simple as that. The mobile flower shop provides so much more opportunity being able to reach different communities, attend events and partner with many different businesses.

Let’s talk about “Andie”! Andie is a 1959 GMC 9320 Truck, a manual half-ton that has been converted to a “four-on-the-floor”. The name “Andie” comes from the movie Pretty in Pink starring Molly Ringwald, a favourite from Dana’s childhood. Someday, she hopes to add a “Duckie” to her fleet as well!

Prior to the floral business, Dana was a waitress for 20 years. During the pandemic the restaurant industry took a huge hit, this led to Dana losing her job multiple times with the repetitive closures issued by the government. These unfortunate circumstances gave her time to self-reflect and dream of possibilities. She ended up taking a free course hosted by the Women’s Entrepreneurship Centre at Laurie in the fall of 2020 which got the ball rolling on her eventually starting her own business. She had also enrolled in a floral design course with the Toronto Flower School. This seemed like the best fit for her as it gave her an opportunity to pursue something she was passionate about (plants/flowers) and be creative from a hands-on approach.

Like many entrepreneurs, Dana has had her share of challenges and accomplishments. She was very much a list-oriented person prior to starting her business. It became frustrating and stressful when items on her list were out of her control, resulting in them not being checked off her list immediately. But, with the roadblocks and obstacles she faced, she pursued them with a positive attitude and got past them and will continue to do so with her ambition and determination to keep growing the business. She has loved the process, the friendships she has not only made locally, but also across the U.S. with the power of social media. The support in the local small business community is overwhelming and she loves it!

Spill The Dirt Flower Truck is growing and is looking to add a cut flower farm this season. They hope to add more features as they grow, like workshops, U-Picks and a farmstand at the farm.

Check them out! Get in touch with them to involve them in your next corporate event, photoshoot, party or whatever you are planning!
